Pilularia globulifera

Pilularia globulifera, commonly known as pillwort, is a low-growing, creeping aquatic fern with slender, grass-like green fronds that form mats along pond margins and shallow water. In summer it produces tiny, spherical reproductive structures (sporocarps) rather than true flowers, giving a subtle textural interest in wet soils and marginal ponds.

This species is valuable for wetland biodiversity, providing cover for invertebrates and contributing to naturalistic pond ecosystems. Its creeping, mat-forming habit and tolerance of consistently moist or shallowly submerged soil make it ideal for pond edges, bog gardens, and damp margins.
