Stratiotes aloides
Stratiotes aloides, commonly known as Water Soldier, is a unique floating aquatic perennial that forms rosettes of stiff, sword-shaped green leaves resembling a small aloe plant. During summer it produces small white flowers, while the plant naturally rises to the water surface during the warmer months before sinking below the surface in autumn to overwinter.
This species thrives in still or slow-moving ponds and provides excellent shelter for aquatic wildlife, including insects, amphibians, and small pond creatures. Its ability to absorb nutrients from the water makes it a useful oxygenating plant, helping to maintain a healthy pond environment while adding an unusual and attractive feature to wildlife ponds and naturalistic aquatic settings.
