Trapa natans

Trapa natans (Water Chestnut) is an attractive floating aquatic plant with distinctive rosettes of glossy green leaves that can develop rich red tones in bright light. Its dense surface cover provides shade, helps reduce algae by limiting excess light and offers valuable refuge for shrimp, fry and other small aquatic life.

Thriving in warm, still water with bright lighting, Water Chestnut requires no planting as it naturally floats on the surface. It is well suited to both aquariums and sheltered ponds, where its vigorous growth helps absorb excess nutrients and create a more natural aquatic environment. Regular thinning may be required to maintain healthy surface coverage and allow sufficient light to reach submerged plants.
